RIP in Tony Gwynn

Full story

The lefty-swinging Gwynn, nicknamed Mr. Padre, had a career .338 batting average, won eight National League batting titles and played in the franchise’s only two World Series.

He died early Monday morning at Pomerado Hospital in Poway, California, while surrounded by his family, the Baseball Hall of Fame announced.

“Major League Baseball today mourns the tragic loss of Tony Gwynn,” commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement Monday. “The greatest Padre ever and one of the most accomplished hitters that our game has ever known, whose all-around excellence on the field was surpassed by his exuberant personality and genial disposition in life.

“… For more than 30 years, Tony Gwynn was a source of universal goodwill in the National Pastime, and he will be deeply missed by the many people he touched.”

Gwynn had been signed to a one-year contract extension as the baseball coach at San Diego State on Wednesday. He had been on medical leave since late March while recovering from cancer treatment. He took over the program at his alma mater after the 2002 season.

Survivors include his wife, Alicia, daughter, Anisha, and son, Tony Jr., who plays with the Philadelphia Phillies. Gwynn Jr., who is hitting .155 in 52 games this season, was put on the bereavement list Monday.

Are guns really that dangerous?

Full story here

A popular message circulating the internet claims that “guns don’t kill people, doctors do,” based on statistics that theoretically show that doctors are responsible for more accidental deaths every year than firearms. Independent research by NaturalNews staff shows that this claim is based on a logical fallacy of comparing apples and oranges, but according to the hard statistics, doctors do indeed kill more people than guns.

The message, which sometimes says that doctors kill more people than guns and traffic accidents combined, has been circulating the internet for years. Like many urban legends that cross the internet, it has a lot of “facts” for its readers, but it is unlike most urban legends in that it quotes a source: “Statistics provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.” The message was even recounted in an article by Nathan Tabor. The letter claims that:

— There are 700,000 physicians in the United States.
— There are 120,000 accidental deaths in the United States caused by physicians every year, and the accidental death percentage per physician is 0.171.
— There are 80 million gun owners in the United States.
— There are 1,500 accidental deaths from guns every year, regardless of age group, and the accidental death percentage per gun owner is 0.0000188.

This means, the letter points out, that doctors are 9,000 times more deadly than gun owners.

Tabor’s reason for pointing out these statistics seems to be the endorsement of second amendment rights, but the stats have turned the heads of many people, regardless of their stance on gun control. The claim has been reprinted across the internet on sites such as Rense.com, and other sites that warn of the dangers of modern medicine. NaturalNews staff members were unable to find DHHS figures that either supported or debunked the urban legend’s claims. Such figures are hard to compare anyway, as the internet anti-chain-letter site BreakTheChain.org points out with responses gathered from the public:

— Most people see doctors when their health is already poor, so that has to be considered a factor in any doctor-related deaths, accidental or otherwise.
— Some people will never interact with a gun in their lifetime, but very few people will never see a doctor. This means that doctors could be more lethal simply due to a greater chance of public exposure to them.

As you can see, the doubts raised by these factors mean the statistics cannot be fairly compared, however NaturalNews’s stance is that conventional medicine is still one of the top causes of death in the United States. Specifically, information obtained by Death by Medicine shows that an estimated 106,000 people die from adverse drug effects — from properly prescribed drugs — every year, and approximately 98,000 die annually from some sort of error by medical staff. Compare this to statistics from the Department of Justice and the U.S. Centers for Disease control for the year 2004, which show an estimated 16,137 people were victims of homicide (not just firearm murders) in the United States.

Most people can agree that doctors and guns can both be lethal. But comparing doctor deaths with gun deaths seems odd. For one thing, the intention is different. Doctors are usually trying to save patients, not kill them. Violent criminals who might use guns in committing a crime, however, often do have the intention of causing physical harm. Doctors may be dangerous through their ignorance or incompetence, but they are not actually out to kill anyone.

Malcolm Young had a stroke – sucks balls

Full story

AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young is ill and is “taking a break,” the band posted on its website Wednesday.

But the hugely popular group will continue, AC/DC said in the statement.

“After forty years of life dedicated to AC/DC, guitarist and founding member Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to ill health. Malcolm would like to thank the group’s diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support,” the statement said.

“In light of this news, AC/DC asks that Malcolm and his family’s privacy be respected during this time. The band will continue to make music.”

Young, 61, formed the group in 1973 in Sydney, Australia, with his brother Angus. The statement did not reveal what his illness was, though rumors have swirled since an e-mail was sent to a Perth, Australia, radio station earlier this week.

Mark Gable, a fellow musician, told Australia’s ABC Radio that Malcolm Young “is sick. … It’s not just that he is unwell, it’s that it is quite serious.” Gable’s remarks were reported in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The hard-rocking group, whose albums include the multimillion-selling “Back in Black” and “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You),” quickly rose in the music world thanks to their terse riffs and tireless touring. Lead guitarist Angus Young, then and now, is known for wearing a schoolboy uniform on stage.

Bon Scott, who sang lead for the band in the ’70s, died in 1980 just as “Highway to Hell” became AC/DC’s breakthrough album. He was replaced by Brian Johnson, who sang on AC/DC’s biggest chart hits, including “You Shook Me All Night Long” and “Thunderstruck.”

The group has continued putting out million-sellers to the present day. AC/DC’s most recent studio album, “Black Ice” (2008), debuted at No. 1 in 29 countries — including the United States — sold 6 million copies and produced the Grammy-winning track “War Machine.” It was the second biggest-selling album of the year.

Malcolm Young’s guitar has been a major part of the AC/DC sound — a sound often slammed by rock critics but beloved by fans of hard rock and heavy metal. Other guitarists, including Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, rank him highly.

Young has said he’s proud of the band’s straightforward, powerhouse crunch.

“People can go out and hear R.E.M. if they want deep lyrics, but at the end of the night, they want to go home and get f*****! That’s where AC/DC comes into it,” he once said.

Recent “gang” problem in Louisville

I’m sick of the recent Louisville “gang” issue. There are basically two sides.

1 – white people blaming the black community

2 – black people blaming white people for being racist

Both sides are stupid. It’s the government’s fault. They care more about Derby time and wearing red to support U of L than solving these issues. When black and white people argue like this, the government which hates all people equally, wins. Race is not the issue.

I grew up in Crescent Hill. The area is more diverse than people think. A lot of African Immigrants lived within 2-3 blocks from my childhood home, due to the Southern Baptist Seminary being near. That also brought a lot of Asians to the area, people of Middle Eastern descent and just about every other ethnic group known to man.

While the Highlands are known for “gay men,” Crescent Hill was known for gay women. Crescent Hill is just like the Highlands. You will see interracial couples, gay couples and everything in between. My point is simple. These diverse people didn’t cause crime, trouble or a decrease in land value.

When it comes to the West End, white people assume blacks are to blame. Blacks then turn around and blame whites for being racist and not caring. Sadly, both sides are wrong. We have a local government that does nothing. How about the Mayor reaches out to these people instead of worrying about what famous people are coming to town for the Derby. Maybe spend less time building more dog parks for them to shit in. My dog will shit anywhere, just saying.

If blacks can do well in Crescent Hill, there’s no reason they can’t in the West End. If whites from Crescent Hill can accept black people as equal, why can’t all of Louisville? I grew up near every race known to man and never walked outside in fear. Reading comments from ignorant people on sites such as FaceBook is beyond pathetic.

Shark attacks on the rise!

Some experts say humans could be to blame for shark attacks because they have polluted the waters, overfished and taken away the food that sharks normally eat.Man Wrestles Shark Ashore, Then Releases ItTo test the theory, a team of experts from Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” series show “Sharkpocalypse” took to the waters of the Bahamas with ABC News in search of the frightening creatures.During an excursion into the Atlantic Ocean near Nassau, the researchers’ boat was immediately surrounded by Caribbean reef sharks. Though normally shy around divers, the sharks have been known to get aggressive in the presence of food. As of 2008, there had been 27 reported Caribbean reef shark attacks on humans.

Another time, the “Sharkpocalypse” team tested the palate of a tiger shark with a buffet that included fish, pork, beef links, turkey and even a watermelon. A 14-foot tiger shark went straight for the barracuda, a fish typical of its diet. Next it went for the pig and then the turkey. The day’s lesson: Disrupt the shark’s environment — take away their fish — and they’ll feed on the next best thing. In another experiment, the researchers baited the sharks into a feeding frenzy and then sprayed a repellent that made them scatter in seconds.Sharks are some of the most feared predators on the planet.Last year, there were 53 attacks in the U.S. alone, and worldwide there were 80 unprovoked attacks, up from 78 the year before, according to the International Shark Attack File at the Florida Museum of Natural History. This year, in the U.S. alone there have already been 18 — with two occurring last week in Hawaii.Sam Champion Meets Sharks Eye-to-Eye With ‘Shark Week’ TeamPaul de Gelder, a highly trained diver, was in the waters off the coast of Garden Island, Australia, when a 10-foot bull shark shredded his arm and leg in 2009.“I can see the lip pulled back, I could see the gums and I could see these teeth all across my leg and over my wrist,” he told the Discovery Channel‘s “I Escaped Jaws.” “I hit him once and that did nothing. …

That’s when the pain really kicked in. … All I could do is flop around in the water while this monster was shaking me.
